Configuring Preferred Read Failure Groups in ASM

In this tutorial I show how to use ASM_PREFERRED_READ_FAILURE_GROUPS parameter to make ASM read from specific failgroup by default

Create diskgrup newdg normal redundancy

failgroup fg1 disk '/dev/sde1' name NEWDG_DISK1

failgroup fg2 disk '/dev/sdf1' name NEWDG_DISK2;

col name format a40

set linesize 150

select group_number, name, state, type, total_mb, free_mb from v$asm_diskgroup;

create tablespace newtbs01 datafile '+NEWDG' size 10m;

create table newtable_01 tablespace newtbs_01 as select * from dba_objects where rownum<1000;

select instname, failgroup, sum(reads), sum(writes) from v$asm_disk_iostat where failgroup in ('FG1','FG2') group by instname, failgroup order by 1,2;

select count(1) from newtable_01;

alter system flush buffer_cache;

alter system set asm_preferred_read_failure_groups='NEWDG.FG1';
